January through early March is one of the most flexible times to visit Walt Disney World. Crowds are typically lighter outside holiday weekends, the weather is comfortable for walking, and festivals add something to do. The trade-off is that refurbishments are common, so it pays to check what will be down before you book.
Crowds
After the holiday rush ends in early January, crowds generally ease. The busiest points in winter tend to be the long weekends, especially Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day, and the weeks when schools in colder regions have mid-winter breaks. Midweek days in late January and early February are traditionally the quietest.
Crowd levels change by year and by day, so use a crowd calendar when you pick specific dates.
Weather
Central Florida winters are mild but not warm every day. Days are often pleasant, mornings and evenings can be cool, and cold fronts occasionally bring chilly, windy days. Pack layers, and bring a light jacket for evening fireworks and shows. Pool days are possible but not guaranteed, and heated pools help.
What's confirmed for early 2027
A few schedule items are already known:
- EPCOT International Festival of the Arts runs January 15 through March 1, 2027.
- EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival starts March 10, 2027.
- Disney Skyliner is scheduled to close for annual maintenance from January 24 through January 30, 2027. Plan alternate transportation if you are staying at a Skyliner resort that week.
- Room refurbishments at Disney's All-Star Movies Resort are scheduled to continue through late January 2027.
Refurbishment calendars change often, and new closures can be added at any time, so check the official Walt Disney World site or the My Disney Experience app closer to your trip.
Dining and lodging
Winter is a good time to find reservations at popular restaurants, though the busiest tables still book early, especially around holiday weekends and festival dinners. Resort availability tends to be better than in summer or around spring break, and package or room-night offers are often released for the early-year season. Check current offers rather than assuming.
Tips for a winter visit
- Check refurbishments for every park before you finalize a plan.
- Book your must-do dining at the start of your booking window.
- Pack for variable weather, including a warm layer and a rain jacket.
- Plan for earlier closing times on some days, since winter park hours can be shorter.
- Pick a festival to build around, such as Festival of the Arts, if you want a theme.
Our take
Winter is our favorite season for first-timers who can travel outside school breaks, because the parks feel more manageable and the weather is easy. The key is to stay flexible about closures and to avoid the holiday weekends if crowds are a concern. If you are traveling from somewhere cold, a few days in Florida in January or February is one of the most reliable ways to break up the season.
